With a strong performance at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Sreeja Akula became the highest-ranked Indian table tennis player at world No. 22 in the women’s singles category.
Tuesday saw a change to the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Rankings.
Akula blanked Sweden’s then-world No. 58 player in Paris in 2024. After defeating Singapore’s 52nd-ranked Zeng Jian 4-0 in the round of 64, Christina Kallberg of Sweden prevailed 4-2 in the round of 32.
Manika Batra and Akula were the nation’s first table tennis players to get to the individual round of 16 at the Olympics. Nevertheless, in the round of 64, Akula fell to world No. 1 Yingsha Sun of the People’s Republic of China 4-0.
Batra also moved up three spots to come in at number 25, while Akula moved up three spots from her previous ranking. Akula’s previous career high rank was world No. 24, which she attained in June following her victory at the WTT Contender Lagos.
