Lewis Richardson of Team GB will return from the Paris Olympics with a bronze medal after losing heartbreakingly to Marco Verde of Mexico in the semifinals.
Despite appearing to have done enough to qualify for Friday’s final, Richardson—the only remaining British boxer in Paris—lost on split decision.
Before the final round, he was up on two judge’s scorecards, down on one, and level on the other two. However, the five judges all awarded the Mexican the final point, giving him a 3-2 victory.
“I believed Lewis had done enough to win in the final round,” stated Steve Bunce, a boxing analyst for the BBC.
